Background

The use of digital devices can be harmful or beneficial. The fact remains, however, that it can no longer be avoided, not even with children. What parents are concerned about the most are unlimited use and the inappropriate content children can stumble across online in no time.

In the case of Argeta Junior, we found a way to take advantage of the positive aspects of modern technologies and to use the time spent by children on digital devices to foster their development.

Idea

We offered children and their parents something useful and fun – unique branded content to promote the children’s development, designed specifically for children aged 4 to 9.

Strategy

The main problems as far as children using digital devices is concerned are excessive use and loads of inappropriate content. With strategic content planning and an international team of developmental psychologists and other experts, we have surpassed both issues:

1. All the content blocks are split into smaller units that can be solved in a couple of minutes, which means that excessive use of electronic devices is not encouraged.

2. The content is based on reading and/or solving cognitive tasks, which are two of the most effective activities with proven longterm effects on the child’s cognitive development.

3. In order for the content to truly serve its purpose, we adapted its types and difficulty levels to different age groups, since cognitive development is fastest in childhood and different age groups cannot be addressed by the same content.

4. Additional safety was provided in the form of timed reminders, which encouraged users (after they have used the platform for 30 minutes) to also undertake other activities, ones without digital devices, and a parents’ corner, where parents can monitor their children’s activity and progress.

Implementation

Online platform

On the online platform, 3 types of unique branded content from the popular fields of sport, science, environmental protection, and social and emotional development are available to children and parents. All the content is subdivided according to 3 age groups (4–5, 6–7 and 8–9 years), with the user experience being rounded off by a loyalty programme and a parents’ corner, where parents can monitor their children’s activity and progress.

Unique interactive fairy tales

We worked together with renowned children’s authors, illustrators and developmental psychologists to create a number of interactive fairy tales about duckling Junior, which promote the development of cognitive and motor skills. All the books incorporate various tasks and games, which are organically integrated into the stories and the accompanying illustrations. The stories and the tasks are suitably adapted to individual age groups.

Unique games aimed to develop competencies

In addition to the books, the platform contains custom-made games, which have also been designed in cooperation with developmental psychologists and which foster the development of individual cognitive and motor competencies of children of different ages.

Tasks and challenges

Learning is also based on the strengthening of neural connections, which can be achieved by repetition. That is why we designed the tasks and challenges in a way that enables the children to solve one task per day and continue the next day. In addition to learning, the tasks also strengthen gratitude and other competencies related to the children’s social and emotional development.
